1. Match architecture and package format
Run uname -m to identify the architecture. x86_64 and aarch64 require different release assets. Then choose the package that fits how you manage software:
| Format | Typical use |
|---|---|
| AppImage | Launch a standalone app file after allowing execution. |
| DEB | Debian / Ubuntu package management. |
| RPM | Fedora / compatible RPM-based distributions. |
| Flatpak bundle | Install through Flatpak with its runtime and sandbox. |
Read the selected release’s compatibility notes. A package format alone does not guarantee it works with every distribution or GPU.
2. Verify the package
Compare the downloaded file with the matching entry in the release checksum list. Replace this example with the actual filename:
sha256sum ~/Downloads/photocraft-file.AppImageDownload the package and checksum list from the same official release. If they do not match, replace the download before continuing.
3. Run an AppImage
In your file manager, open the file’s properties and allow execution as a program. Alternatively, use the actual file path in a terminal:
chmod +x ~/Downloads/photocraft-file.AppImage
~/Downloads/photocraft-file.AppImageRun as your normal user. If it fails, launch it from a terminal so you can capture the error. Do not assume every failure is a missing dependency; architecture and graphics initialization also matter.
4. Install a Flatpak bundle
If Flatpak is already configured, install the official downloaded bundle. Replace the example filename with the exact asset you selected:
flatpak install --user ~/Downloads/photocraft-file.flatpak
flatpak run ai.storyteller.photocraftFollow any runtime prompts from Flatpak. For DEB or RPM packages, use your distribution’s package manager so dependencies are handled normally.
5. If drag and drop does not work on Wayland
The upstream README documents a Wayland drag-and-drop limitation. Start with File → Open instead of dragging the file. Record whether the session is Wayland or X11 when reporting a problem.
A file-opening issue is different from a launch or GPU failure. Test a small PNG through the menu before changing your display session or graphics settings.
